The french link has two joints so it does not have the nutcracker action of a single jointed snaffle, as pressure is distributed more evenly.
The continental places light pressure on the poll, tongue, lips and bars but when used with a second rein the poll and lip pressure increase. This bit is handy when a horse becomes strong when jumping/hunting etc.
